An Orcas Island man accused of a violent attack on a live-in girlfriend is slated to stand trial in late September on seven criminal charges, including two counts of second-degree rape, a Class A felony.
A Lopez Island man accused of a late-night sexual assault of a female friend more than twice his age will stand trial for rape in late August.

On Dec. 9, Brian Kelly Nelson Bernstine, 30, pleaded guilty in San Juan County Superior Court to one count of third-degree assault, a Class C felony, and to one count of fourth-degree assault, a gross misdemeanor. Bernstine, identified as a Woodinville resident in court records, is slated to be sentenced Jan. 13 under a drug offender “prison-based” sentencing alternative. He was ordered to held in custody pending that mid-January sentencing hearing.
