If it was made in Europe, can reach speeds well over 100 mph, and glistens in the sun, then Randy Davis and Leif Benson will love it.
The Orcas mechanics are in business together, reopening Gordy’s Garage as A-1 AutoWorks. Davis previously ran Gordy’s Garage from 2005 through 2007. The partners say their specialty is cars of the European variety, including Volkswagens, Audis, and Porsches. Both men drive VW Touaregs, and Benson boasts an additional five Volkswagens in his fleet.
“I am an avid European car connoisseur,” Benson said.
But those with American and Japanese automobiles need not worry – they service those too. Davis even has a restored 1968 Corvette convertible.
After he left Orcas three years ago, Davis and his family moved to eastern Washington, where he began commuting to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and became Ford diesel certified, working on late model Ford super duty pick-ups. After more than two years of experience on the North Slope, Benson and his family decided to move back to Orcas.
A-1 AutoWorks, located on Mt. Baker Road, offers a full range of mechanical services, including oil changes, computer diagnostics, tire repair and sales.
The shop opened on May 3, and the men say “business has been steady.”
“We’re really happy to give people rides home if their car is being worked on,” Benson said.
Davis’ wife Erin works at Kathryn Taylor Chocolates in Eastsound. The couple has a five-year-old son, Maddox, and a trio of toy fox terriers at home. Erin’s parents, Ron and Barb Griffin, and her sister, Rachel, all live on Orcas.
Benson and his wife Serra, also long-time islanders, have a five-year-old son named Jai.
Both Davis and Benson have been mechanics for most of their adult lives.
“I love the challenge, diversity, and when people are happy because their car works again,” Benson said.
