The recent thinking of our fire chief to purchase a boat-ambulance is perfectly sensible in protecting the “veritable life, safety and health” of every Orcas resident. A boat that will venture forth when neither Coast Guard, the Sheriff’s craft or puny private vessels dare to challenge the raging seas.
This one million dollar plus craft with a 24/7 ready berth shall of course come equipped with expert maintenance personnel that can oversee the complexities of medical, electronic communication and propulsion systems. Frankly, I am disappointed that the chief did not think about a 24/7, all weather helicopter to work in conjunction with the boat-ambulance. In fact, our department should not be limited to such infrastructure beside its growing stable of equipment and buildings. We should consider the construction of a fire- hospital and rest home to take care of the critical needs of overflow patients from the clinic and those needs of exhausted fire personnel in their waning years. Think of this as a stimulus package that will be the envy of every city and county in the country. Yes, and only local businesses shall be given the contract to make the above equipment. Please join with me in supporting the next fire levy, that will surely need replenishment of its depleted funds.
