Be more conscious on the road

I believe in the inherent goodness of people, at least 99 percent of those living on this island. But since returning to Lopez Island three years ago, and being close to a main road, I have become increasingly aware of the number of drivers who speed in areas clearly marked with signs and red flags. Since becoming aware of the 98 percent of violators, I watch my own speed very carefully. Doesn’t make me great and wonderful, but I am conscious of my driving and speeds.

What is especially scary to me is the dump trucks and delivery trucks who come through this area doing 45 to 55 mph in a 25 mph area. Do those trucks have a special permit to speed that none of us know about? Having been a truck driver years ago, I know how long it takes to stop one of those trucks. At those speeds, it’s far too long to save an elder, a child on a bicycle or someone walking. Not to mention someone’s beloved pet.

I have contacted the Sheriff numerous times and our county councilman, but as adults we should not need constant supervision. We simply need to become conscious of what we are doing and how fast we are doing it.

I consider this community quite a wondrous community and I am proud to be a working part of it. And so I am appealing to all drivers, please become more conscious of your speeds. The life you save may be one of your neighbors or loved ones.
