DON’T UNDERESTIMATE EGGITHA

“Eggcited”

to give support

I would like to toss my hat into the ring for Eggitha for mayor. I am eggcited to give her my plucky support.

Eggitha may be an underdog and have a few cracks in her platform, but she has int(egg)rity, a heart of gold, and comes from a family of good eggs. Eggitha is a humble chicken, not likely to strut her stuff or feather her own pillow. In fact, she pledges to clean up government with her feather duster.

Eggitha is eggsactly what we are seeking in a civil servant, rather than someone with a more fowl nature.

Eggitha will produce for you. She guarantees that your taxes will remain cheep cheep cheaper by the dozen. She is a penny henny pincher who will crow on your behalf.

Eggitha will guard the chicken feed in the hen house from the foxes. She will protect your hard-earned hard-scrabble. She possesses true grit.

Eggitha pledges that wherever she goes, everything grows! Yet she will reduce global warming by reducing emissions.

One of her best qualities is that she will not crack under pressure. When the going gets tough, she is one tough old bird! Yet she is of good humor, bold, and tells great yolks. Eggitha wishes all the candidates good pluck and a good cluckle! Vote for Eggitha!

Eggitha’s rebuttal to David Johnson’s letter

Eggitha, Mayor of Eastsound candidate, knows of Mr. Johnson’s letter to the editor. She has decided to take the high road and not get involved in negative campaigning. She prefers not to point out the defects and deficiencies of the other candidates.

For instance, April has only one horn and hasn’t produced milk in years. Mikey is rarely seen at The Office Cupboard not lying down (where’s the energy needed for Mayor?), and Dakota has an identity problem, since he clearly should have been a pony! And Darwin has more facial gray hair than Eggitha’s campaign manager, which doesn’t bode well for longevity.

No, Eggitha prefers to remain positive, pointing out that she is the only GREEN CANDIDATE. How can she claim this, you ask? Well, she produces organic brown eggs (with no exposure to hormones or antibiotics), she free ranges, and she produces fertilizer. In addition, she loves children, loves to be petted and picked up…just ask my grandchildren. And finally, she has lived on Orcas her entire life (with the exception of her first 24 hours, when she was in route from Nebraska). Clearly, she deserves to become Mayor of Eastsound and will serve Eastsound with intelligence, commitment, and honesty. She will show up for events (something that April is unwilling to do!) and represent us with integrity.

The campaign is coming to a close and on July 4th at the Village Green when the Mayor will be announced. All ballot boxes will be collected by 4 p.m. on Friday, July 3 and Pay-Pal will be closed at 12 p.m. on July 4. Voting will continue at the Ballot Booth at the Village Green until 2 p.m. After counting the votes and tabulating the results, the Mayor will be announced. We hope that you’ll celebrate this great occasion with us. Thanks to all who have supported this fundraiser for Children’s House, and you can continue to see the results at www.oich.org.

Donna Laslo

One World Producer

A thank you from Martin Lund

I would like to thank those who never get any recognition unless something goes wrong. Firstly, “Let there be light,” Phil Burbo, and secondly, “Mr. Cool under any circumstance,” Kevin Dickey, our sound engineer. These guys can make you or break you and both succeeded in “making” us all weekend. The Funhouse’s Kate Hansen and Pete Moe, “Headwaiter” Sparks as well as “queen of yummies,” our cook de jour, Tetsie Wong. And what about those incredible flowers that adorned the stage? Only Sallie Bell could have done that neat trick! Now for the “Den Mother of the Decade,” “Ms. D,” aka Donna Laslo, a producer whose tireless devotion to clarity and daily walks into my mind helped make this show the best ever. Bless you all, and to my hero, Ed Sullivan, “Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, we have … The Beatles!” And so we did…”All you need is love, yeah, yeah, yeah….”

Dress informally for Adult Prom

The benefit dance for John Baker on July 10, billed as “The Prom you Never Had,” is a stroke of genius, promising an evening of dancing to the big band sound of Orcatrazz.

John Baker is a super guy and our dear friend, so naturally, our first thought was “What a wonderful event, and for such a noble cause!” Our second thought was “What are we going to wear?” It’s probably fair to say that few island residents have a tuxedo hanging in their closets, and no more than a handful of the ladies keep a proper gown handy. We don’t know what the going rate for tuxedo renting is, but we know ladies can spend a fortune to dress for a formal affair. We do have a few fine ladies’ wear shops in Eastsound, and a fabulous jewelry store or two … but the cost of a dress, shoes, jewelry, handbag, hair appointment and manicure is indeed staggering!

While the concept of a grand evening dressed to the nines is a fun one – it seems that given the purpose of the event, the expense of dressing up would be better spent on donations to the cause. We can have just as good a time if we dig out our finest “old stuff,” or get “Orcas dressy” by donning our best blue jeans or khakis. Girls, nobody but you will remember that dress you wore to “what’s-their-names’” wedding three summers ago.

So, by all means, let us all attend this event, but let us do so wearing our compassion in lieu of new clothes or rented formal attire. The spirit of giving is one of the distinguishing attributes of the Orcas community, and we can do that without having to get all gussied up. Who wants to wear a tie in July anyway?

Save Orcas Rec

As a part-time Orcas Island Resident, it’s come to our attention that the council is considering a 100 percent budget cut, essentially wiping out the Orcas Rec Program.

Each year, one of the reasons we come back to Orcas and maintain two properties there, is that our children love the time they spend on the island, a large part of which is a function of what Didier Gincig and team do to provide great kids programs.

Our son and daughter are both of the age that they need and enjoy on-island activities such as British Soccer Camp, the Sailing Camp, etc.

Since both my wife and I work, the only way for Orcas to be viable for us as summer residents is to have programs such as this.

I suspect that other summer residents such as our families, to say nothing of the full time islanders, will have to question how they can ensure quality experiences for their children in the absence of Orcas Rec.

We also contribute money out of our pocket to the program, so we hope that the county does NOT chose to cut this much needed program.

Having served as a Trustee on the Orcas Island Library board, I appreciate the need as council members to make spending tradeoffs, but hopefully island and visiting children won’t be left without a program as a result of your final decisions.

Moran House Tour a success

And what a celebration it was! Well over 100 people enjoyed Father’s Day by touring homes that Robert Moran, a true father in many ways, built for his family and workers. The centennial celebration that followed, held in the Rosario mansion’s fireplace Room, honored Moran’s move into the mansion on June 21, 1909. Christopher Peacock and Becky Burns, Moran’s great-granddaughter, read comments from the first entries in the 1909 guest registry. A lively auction followed, in which Carolyn Morgan-Crawford won the Jennifer Lake print.

Our thanks and cheers go to all who made this Orcas Island Historical Society fund raiser so successful:

Christopher Peacock for the initial idea of a Rosario OIHM partnership; owners Jerry and Jan Barto, Becky Burns and Carolyn Morgan-Crawford for opening their properties for the day; Jennifer Lake for donating her print for the auction; Tom Averna for captaining the Pelagic and ferrying guests to the White Beach Moran house; Andrea Cohen for a special exhibit at the museum; Christina Orchid for amazing celebration food; Cascade Bay Grill for the special menu; and the ready, willing and able committee members and volunteers for the day: Charles Toxey, Edrie Vinson, Carol and Bogdan Kulminski, Margot Shaw, Matthew Maher, Barbara Evans, Mike Douglas, Betty Marcum, Mary Gardner, Sue Foulk, Sue Wood, Nancy Ayer, Jan Zehner, Barbara Jamieson, Marsha Spees, Patty Moran-Hodge, Sandy Huie, Stewart Hiester, Malia Burns, and Key Club members Stephanie Shaw and Iris Parker-Pavitt.

Keep a look-out for next year’s OIHM “History Lives Here” house tour!
