For the second time in a year or so, someone has gone off the cliff on Channel Rd. This time with mortal consequences that could have been prevented had there been a guardrail at this dangerous spot.
I am a graduate of Lopez Island High School, class of 2005. I am currently studying education at Washington State University. One of the principal candidates at Lopez Island School is Larry Johnson, who was superintendent during my high school years.
During the depression in the ‘30s, people came to Orcas Island to live off the land: one could almost do it. Salmon, cod, clams were plentiful. The orchards, which were famous before Wenatchee got water and took away our markets, were still in good shape. Most vegetables were home grown, most women canned, perhaps candled eggs, even made soap.
