At a time when many in our community and across the country are living in fear, it feels critical for our local community-based organizations to unequivocally state their values. In particular the climate of intolerance and the overt assault on the rights of certain groups shown by the current presidential administration and by its millions of supporters makes it imperative that we resist, both as individuals and as institutions.
Salmonberry School, at its very core, is a community that believes in the uniqueness, wisdom and beauty of all children. We model through our practice and proclaim through our stated vision and values that each child has an innate right to grow, unafraid and unfettered, into their own full potential surrounded by the love and support of those around them. Our teachers, staff and Trustees affirm that all children are welcome here, regardless of race, country of origin, religion, or gender identity.
Our hearts break for those young people who are struggling with any feelings of doubt as to whether they are welcome, accepted and cared for within their country or community. We wish to state loudly and proudly that we are a place of sanctuary and safety for young people. The responsibility to not just care about, but to care for all our students is something we embrace with the deepest reverence.
Our sincere compassion goes out to all the courageous individuals who greet each day with uncertainty, and are nevertheless able to carry on. May we each continue to support one another during these divisive days. We express gratitude to all individuals and organizations working similarly to provide care, support and sanctuary for any who are in need.
Sincerely,
Paul Freedman, Head of School, Salmonberry School
