The first priority of a Lopez Port Commissioner is to see that the airport is operated knowledgeably and managed efficiently and safely.
After reviewing the qualifications of the candidates who have filed for Port Commissioner, Position 2, and determining which of the candidates can best meet the needs of not only the airport but the desires and wishes of the Lopez Community in other endeavors, we have determined that Stephen Adams is the superior candidate.
His teaching, academic and practical mechanical experience, long time community involvement such as being an EMT, firefighter, three-term elected fire commissioner and a San Juan County Planning Commission member for the past seven years will make him a valuable asset from the beginning. He has always been fair, objective and impartial in his decisions.
We must recognize that being a port commissioner involves a significant amount of personal time and effort and is a huge commitment. It is about being involved in more than one issue. It is also about running and maintaining an airport that has been recognized by the state of Washington as one of the best small airports in the State based upon sound financial and fiscal responsibility, community involvement, safety and improvements.
Stephen understands and endorses the concept of the Port moving ahead with a plan to help bring about local control of our solid waste and fully supports the Citizens Advisory Committee Report on the Study of Solid Waste and recommends moving ahead to Phase 2 of the study.
Due to federal and state cutbacks, the Port will need to closely analyze revenue and expense streams in the future. It has taken many years to build a Reserve Fund to provide for these unknown expenses and to pay for planned future projects that must be financed from local resources.
Steve’s background, experience and demonstrated leadership and productive results in meeting these challenges is clearly superior. Your support is critical to the continued success of the Port of Lopez.
