My husband and I have been recycling since the mid-1960s without ever paying a cent to do so. We have been pleased to see the scope of recycling expand as it has over the years… and are delighted to live in a community that overall seems to support the process.
It seems that some believe imposing a fee for recycling might discourage recycling. We are not sure what would happen. So, until the “powers that be” ferret out how best to finance the recycling situation at the solid waste facility on Orcas, we are suggesting that a voluntary contribution bucket be available at the recycling center. Contributions could be an ongoing opportunity to show appreciation for the availability of our facility and support continuance of a no fee recycling program.
Paying a quarter or five dollars a load to recycle can ease the financial and ecological burden from all concerned.
Making a voluntary contribution when recycling might sound naive and idealistic. But who knows? It just might work!
