Just a little note about green (renewal energy). One cord of dried Doug Fir is equivalent in energy to 140 gallons of diesel fuel. The cost for diesel fuel would be about $462 at the pump. An equivalent amount of electric energy would cost about $349. So what is the cost of a cord of fir or fir/alder mix selling for on the island? I believe anywhere from $200 to $275. Not a bad bargain, and a green one at that. I know a few homeowners who detest handling the wood and ash, but every bit of green energy that you use helps our planet. And if your cutting you own fire wood – the saying goes “wood warms the body not once but twice.” Some of the info above was extracted from “Northwest Woodlands,” Washington’s Farm Forestry organization’s publication.
