I’ve lived through many campaigns, and I know the commitment and hard work that is required when someone runs for office. I have a lot of respect for Rick Hughes and Justin Paulsen who have spent the last many months campaigning so that they can represent us Orcasonians on our County Council.
I am writing this letter in support of Rick’s candidacy, and here are three major reasons why I’m voting for him:
1) He served in the position of San Juan County Council Member for eight years, from 2012-2020. What an incredible thing that Rick wants to serve our community again in this capacity. During the four years since he last served, Rick has had time to reflect on what he accomplished and what still needs to be done. He has valuable experience that he will continue to build on.
I am impressed with what was accomplished when Rick was on the Council: the building of the Orcas Exchange; the origination of Lopez Solid Waste District; increased support of the arts and diversity; establishment of a good relationship with the Land Bank … to name a few.
2) Rick has good working relationships with state and regional officials, which he has continued to foster during these last four years. He has many endorsements for this election, e.g., Planned Parenthood, Public Lands Commissioner and Washington Conservation Action. His invaluable network of contacts is one that he can connect with on day one of his re-election to the Council.
3) Rick has become a really good listener. He told me that it was important to him to sit down with as many people as he could to listen to what their concerns are, and that’s what he has been doing these last several months. For example, he met with Mark and me for more than an hour one morning. I trust that he will continue to listen to all of our concerns when in office.
