“Abstract Eye” offers wide range of images

A broad selection of non-traditional photography will be on exhibit in Orcas Center’s main gallery and Madrona Room throughout the month of September.

The show, “The Abstract Eye,” opens Friday, Sept. 4, with a buffet reception for participating artists and guests from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The exhibit, sponsored by Orcas Island Camera Club, is open to all island photographers. This is the center’s first major photo show dedicated to a single theme, and the first to feature abstract (sometimes referred to as non-representational) imagery.

Most photography deals in landscapes, portraits, wildlife and other readily identifiable subject matter. By contrast, in abstract pictures the subject matter itself is sometimes difficult to recognize, or often not identifiable at all. This “freedom from subject” allows the artist an immense range of styles, as will be seen in this interesting show.

Participating photographers are reminded to bring their entries to Orcas Center on Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
