The 39th Annual American Legion Salmon Derby was held Jan. 27 and Jan. 28 on Orcas Island. The weather made fishing extremely difficult at times. Only 63 brave fisherman and women signed up this year. Those who did join the derby won some great door prizes donated by local businesses. The winners of this year’s derby are as follows:

First place: John Risko, $1,100, salmon weighed 13 lbs, 13.5 oz.

Second place Ron Nigretto, $500, salmon weighed: 11 lbs, 11.5 oz.

Third place: William Chevalier, $400, salmon weighed 10 lbs. 7.5 oz.

Fourth place: Carter Whalen, $ 250, salmon weighed 10 lbs, 15 oz.

Fifth place: Dan Hanson, $100, salmon weighe 10 lbs. 3.5 oz.

Blind weight prizes went to Matt Minnis and Spencer Watt, who each collected $150.
