Local photographer Anita Leigh Holladay will have images on display at the Orcas Senior Center from Oct. 4 to 28. The exhibit is called “Still Here: Orcas Island from the Back Roads,” and is a collection of images Holladay gathered during her time spent traveling the island each month as a meter reader for OPALCO. As she could display only a small portion of the 350-plus shots she has created, Holladay will also present a brief slide show on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. as a part of the reception for her exhibit, which will run from 5 to 7 p.m.
“I have been taking photographs much of my adult life,” said Holladay, “but I got started with a digital camera in 2004, and began showing my work around the island in the fall of 2005.”
During that time she had a part-time job as a meter reader for OPALCO, which took her all over the island each month, in addition to her professional work as a massage therapist.
“Taking my camera with me meant that I could record a fuller picture of the island than someone who traversed only the island’s main highways,” she said. The job ended in April, due to automation; there are no longer any electric meter readers in the county.
“This fall seemed a perfect time to gather my shots that display my view of the older, funkier side of Orcas: barns, rusting farm trucks, long driveways, quirky stuff that people display,” she said.
The best times to visit the exhibit are Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or Tuesdays and Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Call 376-2677 for more info about viewing hours.
