Even as late departures and cancellations continue to plague the state’s ferry system, on Tuesday, Oct. 19 islanders turned out for A Wave of Gratitude to show the system’s beleaguered workers some love.

The event, which had its impetus in social media, brought school children and adults to the Lopez ferry dock bearing gifts of beverages, baked goods and more. Boxes of cards of appreciation written by students were also presented to ferry workers.

According to Andrea Huss, Executive Director of the Lopez Chamber of Commerce, A Wave of Gratitude was an opportunity to show “appreciation for these essential workers who provide a much-needed service to our communities.”

Lance Evans of the Orcas Chamber of Commerce showed up at the island’s ferry landing guest waiting area with some cookies and a card addressed to the Orcas Ferry Team which, he said, was appreciated.

“I did see other treats at the small station at the top of the ferry landing, so am guessing others did it also.” Evans added that he would “keep thanking folks until I think I’ve reached out to all of them.”

“These are folks who literally help save lives,” offered Lopez Island School District employee and event coordinator Jesse Hammond. “If they weren’t here it would put all our island residents at risk. It’s been particularly hard for WSF staff since the pandemic started and we wanted to show them how much they are appreciated, particularly by us locals.
