For the second year in a row Doe Bay Resort is bringing a festival of music to the island as part of Doe Bay Fest on the weekend of Aug. 14, 15 and 16.
This year’s festival will feature 13 notable Americana, folk and independent musicians from the Pacific Northwest over the course of two days starting on Friday evening.
The festival headliner is an indie rock band out of Seattle, The Long Winters, who will play at 8:40 p.m. on Saturday and have promised to preview new material for the first time at the concert. The special guest master of ceremonies for the festival is KEXP DJ Don Slack.
On Friday night, the lineup includes the Tacoma based duo Goldfinch at 6:30 p.m. The music of Aaron Stevens on guitar and vocals and Ce Sullivan on keyboard and vocals has been described as minimalist folk with a lounge lizard vibe. They are followed by the blend of rock and alternative country of 17th Chapter at 7:30 p.m. The 8:30 p.m. performers are the five-member Seattle based indie rock band Slender Means. The stage belongs to the indie, lyrical and classical music of Tito Ramsey at 10 p.m. A final, yet unnamed band, will finish the evening with a 45-minute performance starting at 10:45 p.m.
On Saturday, the music starts at 20 minutes after mid-day with the Seattle-based two guitar, bass and drum indie music of Ross McGilvray, Chris Crumpler, Aaron Starkey, and Corey Passons of the band Spanish for 100. At 1:20 p.m. it’s Adam Shearer’s Portland band Weinland and its fragile, folksy songs that USA Today said “evokes elements of Neil Young.”
The lively piano-rich Anacortes indie rock band The Lonely Forest plays at 2:20 p.m. and is followed by Seattle-based Friday Mile at 3:20 p.m. and the folk rock, crunk and a cappella sound of Moondoggies at 4:20 p.m.
Then at 5:20 p.m. the doleful strings, merry guitars and other eclectic instruments of Hey Marseilles can be heard, and at 6:15 p.m. the indie rock singer-songwriter from Seattle, David Bazan, who was the lead singer of the now defunct band Pedro the Lion, takes the stage. Bazan will be releasing his first solo album entitled “Curse Your Branches” in September.
The Maldives are the last band of the evening’s main entertainment and Goldfinch and Drew Grow & the Pastors’ Wives are the “after party” performers that will take the music up to midnight.
Tickets are $25 in advance at the resort and $30 online at Brown Paper Tickets www.brownpapertickets.com/event/68077. Prices increase to $40 on Aug. 13.
Food will be served at the Doe Bay Café and in the main stage field and there will be a beer garden. Organizers expect parking to be tight and are encouraging attendees to carpool or bike to the festival.
