Education is the passport to the future | Vikings back on campus

Orcas High School Sophomore

As the newly browned leaves fall on Orcas Island, students grab their backpacks, set their morning alarms, and head to school.

The first day of school was Tuesday, Sept. 3 and students got introduced to their classes and teachers in the days to follow. Sports practices have begun, as has the task that must be relearned over and over every year: how to manage your homework load. Already students have come up with creative ways to study. From frantically reading Beowulf during breakfast in the Commons to utilizing friends to help with math homework, students already are working on their studying techniques.

“I am glad to my teachers as well as see my fellow students, and though the classes are more challenging, I’m going to stay organized and productive. I’m no longer bringing my phone to school as I don’t want the temptation of whipping it out in class as I have done before. I think that this change will greatly increase my productivity and attentiveness, and I look forward to the rest of the school year,” said sophomore Francis Key.

Orcas Island High School seniors are already beginning to work on college applications, essays, and, of course, the long-standing tradition of painting the barn. This year, Lucy Troxel did the design mock-up. The seniors have been working hard to bring design to life.

As they brainstorm for their senior papers and juggle all their classes, our seniors still find time to maintain enthusiasm for this ritual.

“Painting the barn is a really cool tradition and I’m excited to be a part of it!” said senior Sylvia Johnson.
