The evening will feature Orcas musician-singers-songwriters-instrumentalists sharing their work in the intimate space of the OffCenter on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 7:30 pm. Performers are Kels Boreen, a singer/songwriter from Friday Harbor; Kaitlyn Smith, a singer/songwriter from Orcas; Learner and Lucas Limbach, mbira players from Orcas; and The Turtleback Ceilidh Ensemble, performing traditional Irish music.

With a new recording to promote, “Life is Too Sweet,” Boreen hit the road this summer playing a world-infused blend of folk, rock and soul to excited fans up and down the West Coast.

Smith’s set is comprised of finger style, classical guitar and bird-like singing. A Berklee School of Music graduate, Smith studied sound design, arranging, recording and now enjoys making recording a separate art form than that of live performance.

Island brothers Learner and Lucas, who grew up in a marimba-playing family, also had the opportunity to go to Zimbabwe for a year, where they learned to play mbira. They will be playing their own handmade instruments and sharing their experiences through music and story.

The Turtleback Ceilidh evolved out of the Orcas Island traditional Irish music session that meets every Sunday afternoon to play tunes and share camaraderie, strong black tea and pints of amber beer.

All tickets are $10 and may be purchased on the website or by calling 376-2281 ext. 1 or visiting the Orcas Center box office during box office hours. For more information about Orcas Center 2011 season events, visit www.orcascenter.org.
