The Orcas Island Garden Club welcomes Dr. Stephen Jones, wheat breeder and the director of The Bread Lab at Washington State University in Burlington, Washington, on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. at the Orcas Center.

Jones, who has a Ph.D. in genetics, partners with his graduate students to breed wheat and other grains. The Bread Lab is a combination think tank and baking laboratory where scientists, bakers, chefs, farmers, maltsters, brewers, distillers and millers experiment with improved flavor, nutrition and functionality of regional and obscure kinds of wheat, barley, other small grains and beans.

Much like the Little Red Hen, Jones really does it all. The Orcas Island Garden Club welcomes new members and encourages you to enjoy this month’s free presentation, stop by the membership table and consider becoming a member of the garden club. Attendees may enjoy treats in the social hour following the meeting.
