Gingerbread houses dazzle this season

It doesn’t get more festive than hand-made holiday scenes.

Bakers got out their frosting and fondant to add distinctive touches to their cookie creations for the third annual Gingerbread House Contest.

Best-in-show adult winner Bonnie Mahony, who has received that honor every year since the contest’s inception, constructed an elaborate treehouse model with multiple structures and design elements. Her daughter Isabella Mahony-Jauregui also won Best-in-Show for “Izzy’s Bakery.”

The competition is open to all ages and sponsored by The Funhouse and Island Market, where the entries are on display through the end of December at the front of the store. Entrants’ names are not visible to the judges during the decision-making process.

The market will match all prize money won by the Best in Show winners and the funds will be donated to the Orcas charity of each winner’s choice.

“A very special thank you to Jim Bredouw for bringing all things gingerbread to life!” said Nicole Spinogatti, Director of Development and Community Engagement for the Funhouse. “This special event was created by Jim and will continue for many years to come because of his love and dedication to our island’s children and families. We are looking forward to next year’s creations!”
