Indie-folk duo to play at Doe Bay

Jenn Rawling and Basho Parks are coming to Doe Bay Resort for their first performances on the island May 31, 7:30 p.m. and June 1, 7:30 p.m. They will be playing tunes from their album, as well as their favorite covers and new songs written this last winter.

When Basho Parks was hit by a car while riding his bicycle, he broke both of his wrists and thought his days as a string player were over. Five years later he met a guitarist struggling with a similar problem. Years of ceramic-arts work had left Jenn Rawling with severe tendonitis. Two pairs of wounded hands may not be the perfect recipe for most musical duo, but these two have made it work.

“I’ve evolved a new style of playing that makes it easier on my wrists,” Parks said. “My fingers slide more. I was formally classically trained, but my playing now has more of a Middle Eastern and gypsy feel to it.”

After falling in love and two years of creating music, the team has hit the road with their 10-year-old great dane Miles Zanzibar in the smallest RV they could find, a 003 Mercedes Sprinter, on a west and midwest states tour to promote their album “Take the Air.”

So far on their 7,200-mile musical journey they’ve played in bars, where one fan insisted Rawling was his soulmate, they’ve reunited with friends and family, they’ve camped and eaten delicious food.

Rawling’s voice is a force – calling to mind the vocals of Natalie Merchant and Joan Baez. Parks provides a rich range of instruments like the violin, viola, mandolin, ukulele, guitar and backing vocals.

The duo will wrap up their tour on Orcas, which they say is the perfect magical place to celebrate an end to a great adventure.

“It’s the first place I even breathed the word home,” said Parks about past visits to the island. “It was a sacred experience. And spiritually speaking to end there is a way to re-fill our gas tanks in a variety of ways.”
