The San Juan Islands Museum of Art and Sculpture Park, IMA, are co-sponsoring a series of DVD viewings with the island libraries of acclaimed architect James Hubbell’s life work to prepare for his appearance at several exciting public events on San Juan Island from Sept. 3 to 5.
An opportunity to view Hubbell’s DVDs and take part in a Q & A will be at the Lopez Island Library on Saturday, Aug. 8, 4 to 6 p.m., the Orcas Island Library on Friday, Aug.14 from 1 to 3 p.m. and the San Juan Island Library on Sunday, Aug. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Who is Hubbell? He is an internationally known organic architect, painter, stained glass artist and visionary for world understanding. Also as an artist, he is the leading living contributor to the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States.
The DVDs include one on his life’s work, created by PBS in San Diego and one on the evolution of his building projects, created to facilitate world understanding across cultures. For these projects he brought Mexican and U.S. architectural students to Russia to work with other tudents. Together they created a community park and an amphitheater. The same group then went to China to create a park with Chinese architectural students.
These films are intended to introduce Hubbell and his work to the community prior to his arrival over Labor Day weekend in September. Go to www.hubbellandhubbell.com to learn more about his work.
