On Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 10:30 a.m., the Orcas Island Garden Club will present a virtual meeting featuring James Most. He will present “Growing Fruit and Nut Trees in the San Juan Islands.” If you have a question about a specific fruit or nut tree problem, email a photo along with your question prior to the meeting to oigcprograms@gmail.com, so we can share it with the audience while Most addresses your question.
This presentation will be recorded. The link to the live meeting, hosted by the Orcas Island Library, is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84063611347?pwd=UitVTlBYWjRvNXlGMEU4anZPbkZ0dz09
Most will describe common obstacles and local tricks for solving existing fruit and nut tree problems and establishing new orchards. Topics will include site and varietal selection, establishment secrets, pest and disease challenges, grafting to change varieties and improve pollination, stimulating growth on lackluster trees, and controlling excessive growth on vigorous trees.
Most has helped establish hundreds of fruit and nut trees on Orcas Island and operates as a landscape contractor with his business Orchards, Gardens, & Irrigation LLC. He and his family have vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and keep bees and chickens on their property.
