Fourth of July festivities started with a bang, starting with fireworks and live music in Deer Harbor on July 3.

On July 4, the stage on the Green was filled with tents and people enjoying pie and chili contents, cake walks, food and more. It was followed by an afternoon and evening of live music. People were dancing, chatting, eating and utterly enjoying the atmosphere. Later in the evening, the masses spilled onto grassy patches and the beach to enjoy a fireworks display. All of the day’s events were sponsored by the Orcas Chamber of Commerce.

On Saturday, July 6, the 4th of July parade, also sponsored by the chamber, began. Cars, cows and candy were on full display throughout.

“The parade was such a cool show of community and Orcas Island charm. I was inspired by the dedication of the participants, and I loved seeing all the cars and floats!” said Isola Hauser, a parade observer.

Following the parade was the mayoral election. The contestants were Honey Cat, Lilly, Booch, Oonagh, Big Red, and Alfie, who won with a high of 10,766 votes. Nearly $30,000 was raised through the mayoral race for Children’s House this year.

According to Children’s House, “We are committed to giving every child a chance to come to school regardless of their family’s ability to pay. Fundraisers like the Mayor’s Race help us keep tuition affordable for all families.”
