A two-part film series with commentary entitled “Jung and the Cinema” will be offered at the Orcas Senior Center during the first week in August.
Each evening will include a film screening, followed by class discussion “focusing on the various archetypal images which may be symbolically portrayed” in each film, organizers say.
Frances Tobriner, Ph.D./Jungian Analyst, and Pat Littlewood, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, will present. Both are practicing psychologists interested in film as a visual and psychological means of expression.
“Film can be seen as a ritual of initiation whereby one may enter an almost dream-like consciousness that fosters the imagination and hints at layers of meaning beneath the surface,” said organizers. “This year’s series will focus on the universality of archetypal imagery as seen through the lens of Carl Jung and Archetypal Psychology. Emphasis will be placed on the universality of Jung’s archetypes and how the medium of film can foster our ability to engage in a “dialogue” with such images below the normal threshold of consciousness.”
Classes are scheduled to meet at the Senior Center on Thursday, August 5, and Friday, August 6, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Suggested donation is $15 for both nights, or $10 for a single evening. For more information or to pre-register, contact the Senior Center at 376-2677.
