The youth of Lopez Island came home with armfuls of ribbons and trophies from the San Juan County Fair.
Eleven-year-old Hailey King earned the following 4H awards. Horse competing: junior grand champion, trail; junior grand champion, performance showmanship; junior grand champion, gaming showmanship; high point, junior western rider; western games, junior high point; high point open, 12 years and under, English riding; and the Lopez shining star award. Dog competing: junior grand champion, showmanship and high point junior exhibitor. King also qualified to show in both small and large animal round robin, where she competed against all winners in her age group and show each animal.
Danielle Arnott took home the following 4H awards: high point, junior in sewing; overall high point and junior high point in photography. In horse competitions, she won the horse rangers perseverance award. In swine, junior fitting and showing, she won grand champion and grand champion in the gilt, 6 months and under.
Travis Arnott took home reserve champion in beef fitting and showing and reserve champion in market steer. Awarded the most weight gain in beef trophy and the outstanding beef member trophy. In swine, he received a blue ribbon (first place) in fitting and showing and reserve champion in the gilt class, 6 months and under.
Seventeen-year-old Hunter Buffum qualified for state fair in four horse events: performance; gaming events; dressage and jumping and harness driving. She has chosen to compete in harness at the state fair in Puyallup in September. She won the following 4H awards: gaming showmanship, grand champion; senior harness showmanship, grand champion; senior dressage showmanship, reserve grand champion; three grand champions in the harness classes; grand champions in dressage, dressage equitation and dressage hunt seat equitation; fourth saddle seat equitation, grand champion; and reserve grand champion in hunt seat equitation.
