Now in its seventh year, Martin Lund’s One World Music Festival kick starts the summer with a show that will have everyone dancing.

The jazz-based musical variety show, which will take place on June 19 and 20, has become one of Orcas Center’s most anticipated summer events.

Musicians from Orcas and beyond will join together to raise funds for The Funhouse, with a reception (fête/party) at 6:30 p.m. with strolling musicians, followed by performances at 7:30 p.m.

Lund is “certain that The Funhouse has literally saved lives” when he thinks of how teens might otherwise spend their weekends.

“The Funhouse is a gift to not only our children but to all of us,” he said. “We all have gifts and this is my way of giving to something that gives to each and every one of us on this island.”

This year’s theme is “Fete de la Musique,” also known as World Music Day, and is celebrated in more than 500 cities in 100 countries.

“Professionals play next to amateurs on stage and in the street, the young and the seasoned. It is held every year on June 21 as a live music celebration for everyone,” event coordinator Donna Laslo said.

“We need music, especially when we struggle in tough times,” she continued. “It’s about the heart – remembering and celebrating the music and the musician that lives within each one of us.”

Headlining will be jazz vocalist Moqui Lund, singer-songwriter Larry Murante and “violinist to the stars” David Wilson. Orcas musicians include Martin Lund, Grace McCune, Gene Nery, Willy Thomas, master drummer Tony Morales, and the Pamela Wright Choir. “Lopez Sound” vocal ensemble will also join the performance. Plus, there are always a few surprise guests.

New this year, those who donate $75 or more can sit in a French cafe located on stage during the performance. They’re called VIP seating: Very Important Patron. Call The Funhouse at 376-7177 for details.

All net proceeds from the concert go to The Funhouse, with the mission to help children and families on Orcas Island. Call the Orcas Center box office at 376-ACT1 to buy tickets, which are $24, $20 (Orcas Center members), and $12 (students).
