The best way to discover what awaits Chamber Music Festival concert-goers this summer is to attend the Music Lovers’ Seminar on Saturday, May 22.
Popular musician, conductor and lecturer George Shangrow will provide an entertaining and informative overview of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival’s 13th season from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church. The Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival takes place August 12 through 28. Tickets go on sale to the general public on May 26.
You’ll learn fascinating facts about the composers and listen to elements of the compositions from a passionate lover of music. Shangrow is well known for his historical knowledge blended with contemporary wit. As a conductor and music director, Shangrow founded the Seattle Chamber Singers in 1969 and Orchestra Seattle in 1979. He has appeared as guest conductor with the Seattle Symphony, Northwest Chamber Orchestra, Tacoma Opera, Rudolf Nureyev and Friends, Oregon Symphony and the Sapporo (Japan) Symphony. He has taught music history, theory and composition at Seattle University, Seattle Community College and Seattle Conservatory of Music. Seattle-area music lovers know him as former host of the “Live! By George” radio program on Classical KING-FM.
Tuition is $30, and youth ages 10+ are encouraged to attend at no charge. Bring a brown bag lunch; beverages and treats will be provided by OICMF enthusiasts Velma Doty, Karen Hedge, Trisha Loop, Mary Poletti and Eileen Pyka.
