Seven Orcas Island Wrestling Club wrestlers traveled to Oak Harbor High School to compete in another novice tournament on Jan. 21. 25 club teams were in attendance and the OIWC placed fifth in the team standings by winning 12 of 20 total matches. Individually, the young wrestlers secured four first place, one third place, and two fourth place spots in their brackets.
Caden McGuire-King took first place in the 6U, 49-52 lb class. He won his first match with an 8-4 decision and won his second and third matches by pinning his opponents.
David Nunez placed third in the 8U, 65-70 lb bracket. He lost his first match by an 18-1 technical fall, then won his second match with a 13-9 decision, and lost his third match by an 18-3 technical fall.
Greyson Howard took first place in the 10U, 61-64 lb class. He pinned his first opponent, won his second match with a 12-6 decision, and won his third match with a pin.
Aria Griffin placed fourth in the 10U, 63-64 lb class. She lost her first match by a 9-1 decision, lost her second match also by a 9-1 decision, and then got pinned her third match.
Michael Neighbors took first place in the 10U, 115-121 lb class. His first match went into overtime and he won with a 10-8 sudden victory. He won his second match with a 6-2 decision and his third match with a 5-4 decision.
Ty Nunez placed fourth in the 12U, 96-98 lb class. He lost by getting pinned in all three of his matches.
Mario Nunez took first place in the 12U 135-144 lb class. He won his first match with a pin and won his second match with a 6-3 decision.
The Orcas Island Wrestling Club has a couple more novice tournaments scheduled this season. They will be heading to Mount Vernon High School on January 28th and then either to Stanwood High School or Arlington High School for the WWKWL Novice Championships on February 4th. If you see a young wrestler, wish them luck as they are working hard to finish their season strong.
