Mild comedy-lovers beware, John Clancy and his troupe of young improvisational actors are about to hit the stage at Orcas Center again.
Local artist, Kim Middleton of Orcas Island, was jury selected to exhibit her work, “Harpy Eagle,” in the prestigious 2008 Birds in Art exhibition at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisc. Sept. 6 through Nov. 9, 2008.
Caroline Buchanan of Obstruction Island will be featured at the Sept. 23 meeting of the Northwest Watercolor Society. She will be demonstrating some of the effects one can achieve by playing different kinds of pigments against each other, working wet and layering color. The Orcas Choral Society, under the direction of Catherine Pederson will begin fall rehearsals in September in preparation for their winter concert, scheduled for Dec. 13 and 14.
The Actors Theater of Orcas Island announces auditions for the “Jim French Radio Show” on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Grange. These popular radio shows consist of three 30-minute plays read in front of an audience.
In keeping with its mission to host off-island artists with expertise in less common areas of the arts, the Olga Strawberry Council has invited Jeani Reynolds of Victoria BC to present a two-day lantern making workshop on Sept. 20 and 21. Participants will learn how to construct lanterns out of bamboo and wire, then cover and bedeck them with whatever their imaginations conjure up.

The Orcas Island Garden Club will hold its first meeting of the new season on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at the Orcas Center at 10 a.m. The speaker will be John Christianson, owner of Christianson’s Nursery in Mt. Vernon, who will provide an opportunity to purchase plants after his presentation. Everyone is welcome to attend. A single membership is $20 for the year and $25 for couples. Dues help to defray the expense of guest speakers and the rent for meeting at the Orcas Center. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Garden Club on Orcas Island. At the Dec. 12 meeting, those who were members at the first meeting in 1958 will be recongnized. The goal of garden club meetings is to help those who lives on Orcas to enjoy their gardening to the fullest. Speakers direct their lessons toward issues of gardening and bringing greater beauty to the environment. Although she has written poetry to the acclaim of her friends for years, Dorothy (Dottie) Trogdon was not sure if her poetry was good enough to be published in the wider world. To find out, two years ago she submitted her poem “Roses” to a Chicago publication for writers who are more than 50 years old, “Passager.”
