The mostly swing band, Orcatrazz, will be performing at the dinner buffet fundraiser to benefit Orcas Family Health Center’s well child program, primary care program and X-ray center on Dec. 12 at the Orcas Center.

Fun and mayhem is what the audience can expect as the Actors Theater of Orcas Island presents their third annual Off Limits Improvisational Theater on Saturday, Dec. 6.
Kailley Grantham, a flutist in the Orcas High School Orchestra, has been selected for the 2009 All State Band. Those chosen participate in auditions to determine the best musicians of Washington’s school band, orchestra and choir programs.
The work of Island quilters will grace the walls of Orcas Center over the holiday season. The large exhibit, featuring roughly 20 participants, will continue throughout December. It will open Friday, Dec. 5, with a reception in the Madrona Room beginning at 5:30 p.m.
SeaDoc Society Wildlife veternarian Joe Gaydos will give a free public lecture on elephant seals for the Orcas Island Marine Lecture Series’ Family Night “Elephant Seals: Divers of the Deep”. The evening includes a free dinner at YMCA Camp Orkila’s Larry Norman Lodge and elephant seal- related educational activities for children.
Candles are more popular than ever; as a result candle fires in the United States are on the rise. There are twice as many candle fires in December as any other month of the year. The open flame of a candle can easily ignite any nearby combustible. The number one cause of home fires are caused by unattended, abandoned, or inadequately controlled candles followed by leaving candles too close to combustibles. Almost half of these fires start in the bedroom. Children playing with candles started nine percent of candle fires.
Bywater Health Therapies is providing a Free Kids’ Clinic on Tuesday, Dec. 30 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The combined Bowen and Craniosacral Therapy (CST) sessions are for children from newborn through age 17 and last 30-minutes.
After 18 years of providing medical care for the children of San Juan County, Dr. Jeanne Olmsted, pediatrician, has announced that she will no longer maintain a practice on Orcas Island after Dec. 31, 2008.
Dr. Xandra Rarden has joined the Orcas Family Health Center as a family physician on a part-time basis according to Medical Director Dr. David Shinstrom.
