We’ve all done it: rocked out to “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the car. Used our thumb as a mic. Sung so loudly in the shower that the entire household could hear it.
Local musician and actress Grace McCune is encouraging all islanders who dare to showcase their vocal chords in a safe, group setting to join the “Rock on the Rock” choir.
“When we first put it together, it was just a raw idea,” McCune said. “The thought was to do songs that aren’t classically done with choirs.”
Now in its second year, the adult choir is a venue for locals ages 18 and older to sing tunes from bands that most choirs never touch: Leonard Cohen, Beatles, Queen, ABBA. On the menu for this year: revisiting Queen, delving into U2, and adding more soloists and a bigger band. The group is currently accompanied by Ron Myers on the piano and Robert Austin on drums.
“I’ve been accustomed to playing drums in a small band, and this is a great experience playing with a choir and watching how Grace arranges the choir,” Austin said. “And they are great people to work with.”
Austin’s wife, Anji Ringzin, is a singer with the group.
“It’s really fun to get together with people and sing,” Ringzin said. “It’s very low key in that you don’t have to read music. Robert and Grace and Ron made a CD for those of us who sang alto or tenor, so we could learn our parts.”
Ringzin says the biggest challenge for her is learning harmonies, while Austin’s greatest hurdle is learning the music in bits and pieces.
“All of the pieces we perform are medleys, so I don’t hear the full piece until the end of the series,” Austin said.
Around 20 singers signed up last year; McCune says there is no limit to the choir’s size. They performed at the Lower Tavern and during a Concert in the Park session in August.
“I enjoy the camaraderie we experience as a choir,” McCune said. “We have such a diversity of people – we’re kind of a motley crew. We have singers who are 18 years old to 70 years old.”
The choir will meet every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. starting Feb. 3 at the Orcas Center. There are no auditions. The cost is $60 for the eight-week series.
McCune is also offering the second year of a youth chorus. It will focus on a selection of songs from the musical “Cats” by Andrew Lloyd Weber.
“The kids show a real interest in musical theatre,” McCune said. “At the end of the series we will have a performance in costume on the Orcas Center main stage.”
The chorus will meet every Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Orcas Center starting Feb. 3. It is for ages six and older. There are no auditions. The cost is $60 for the eight-week series.
