Anthony Manuel, known for his energetic dance classes and inspirational performances, is presenting his last show – for at least a while.
“After this performance, we’re going to ride off into the sunset,” Manuel said. He is moving to Vermont to be with his girlfriend, but says it’s not out of the question he might return to the San Juans someday.
The Saturday, May 2 shows will feature dancers ages 14 to 62 from Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan. Entitled “Earth Tribes in Rhythm,” the performance will have elements of jazz, tap, hip hop, African, and modern.
“This the fourth year we’ve done an annual show, and it’s the most focused show I’ve done,” Manuel said. “It was originally titled ‘Evolution,’ but it was such a huge topic, it kept growing and growing in my head, so I had to attack it from a different angle. Although we are all different in our shapes and sizes we truly move as one people.”
Manuel is a professional dancer and choreographer from Los Angeles who moved to the islands six years ago. In addition to teaching locally, he offers classes in Seattle, Bellingham, and Vancouver, B.C.
There will be two showings on May 2 at Orcas Center: 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 for non-members, $12 for members, and $8 for students. Tickets may be purchased at www.orcascenter.org/boxoffice or at the Orcas Center Box office Thursdays to Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m., 376-2281 ext. 1.
“This is going to be the most dynamic show I have put on here,” Manuel said. “Every show I have done gets progressively better. The people performing in this show are committed 100 percent to it. The kids are dynamite. They are carrying the show this year.”
