San Juan Nature Institute Salmon Supper

San Juan Nature Institute is holding its second Salmon Supper with Seaside Science from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 14 at Judd Cove, courtesy of Thomas Wendland.

This family event includes a barbecue featuring salmon from Queen Charlotte Island and activities designed to explore the cove and the nearby Land Bank Preserve.

Tickets are $30 per person, $50 per couple or a family ticket of $60 for a party of four family members.

Proceeds will support the institute’s Partners in Science programs at the Orcas Elementary School and sponsor lectures on Orcas Island. Reservations can be made online at www.sjnature.org, by emailing info@sjnature.org or calling 378-3646.

Board member and geologist Michael Yeaman will lead an exploration of the geology of Judd Cove and children will be invited to join environmental educator Alice Hibberd in investigating the plants and animals on a pocket beach on the property.

SJNI coordinates Partners in Science for 4th, 5th and 6th grade students at Orcas Elementary School with grants from Orcas Island Community Foundation and The Russell Family Foundation and funds from individual donors. “Salmon in the Classroom” is a popular program for 4th graders who move on in the next two years to explore the freshwater and marine salmon habitats. Elements of these programs will be shared with guests at the picnic. It also contributes programs for Orcas Island Rec. and presents free public lectures on Orcas.
