There are two opportunities for San Juan residents to sail aboard the Sound Experience historic schooner Adventuress and learn about Puget Sound on Sunday, June 28.
Sound Experience is a Puget Sound-based environmental and youth leadership organization and voyages on Adventuress provide a greater understanding of the complexity of the marine ecological systems.
The morning sail, from 9 a.m. to noon, is an orientation for prospective volunteers. Participants will learn about the programs and mission of nonprofit Sound Experience and about opportunities to serve as volunteers aboard the ship and at dockside programs and events. There is no charge for the orientation, but participants must be 18 or older.
On Sunday afternoon, they are offering a three-hour Public Sail from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants can join the crew to help raise the sails, sing a chantey, take the helm, and learn about the marine environment. All ages are welcome. The cost is $40 for adults, $20 for those 18 and under and no charge for Sound Experience members. Space is limited and reservations are recommended. Both trips depart from and return to the Friday Harbor Marina. For more information and reservations 379-0438 and www.soundexp.org.
