The beats are back: Rock on the Rock Choir returns

Submitted by Grace McCune and Jake Perrine.

Grace McCune and Jake Perrine are coaxing Rock on the Rock Choir (Moulin Rouge, Across The Universe, Rock of Orcas, Teatro Titikookoo, Cirque Us) out of hibernation for an all-new extravaganza. With ten performances on Center Stage this May, “What Dreams May Come” will feature multiple choir ensembles, multiple dance ensembles, acting, and a live band, plus all the creativity, heart, and surprises you have come to expect. The show will run from May 4-20.

Rock on the Rock Choir was birthed by Grace McCune many years ago as a class to give singers of all experience levels a chance to learn to sing together. Over time, it has grown into “the bunny slope of musical theatre on Orcas”, offering people of all ages a chance to expand their performance horizons through singing, dancing, acting, music, performance, aerial acrobatics, and technical theatre in a class setting. With classes/rehearsals typically only once a week until April (when we will start to meet at additional times until the shows in May), these productions are intended to fit into nearly any working person’s / family’s schedule, and be a whole lot of fun at the same time! If you’ve ever thought you might want to “give musical theatre a try,” this is the class and show for you.

“What Dreams May Come” will thematically explore the collective consciousness and many colors of the events of the past few years. It will encompass the usual cabaret collection of about 20 songs, but this time approximately half of the songs will be originals written by local songwriters! Curated from Orcas’ diverse talent pool, Grace and Jake will make band and choir arrangements of songs you may not know …by people you do! The remaining songs will be timely tunes by popular artists. Tiffany Loney, Chelsea Sherman, and Jack Spinagotti will be heading up the dance classes and choreography that will shape the motion on the stage.

This time around, Rock on the Rock is offering these various ways of participating in the production:

• ROTR Adult Choir class (singers 18+ years old): Thursdays 6-8 p.m. – OC Madrona Room

• Youth Musical Theatre class (singing & dancing 8-12-year-olds): Thursdays 3:30-4:25 p.m.- OC Madrona Room

• Teen Musical Theatre class (singing & dancing 13-17-year-olds): Thursdays 4:30-5:30 p.m. – OC Madrona Room

• Jack’s adult/teen hip hop class: Thursdays, 5:45-6:45 p.m. – dance studio

• Tiffany’s Move and Groove class (dancers 18+): Tuesdays 7-8 p.m. – OC Black Box Theatre

Sign-up for these classes will be at the first class meetings the week of January 23-26 at the times above. Feel free to come to the first class for free and see if it is for you before signing up if you choose.

We have several tuition choices for these classes to accommodate all incomes – please pay what you can to help these programs continue. We will also have work-trade options available (you help us with logistics in exchange for tuition) and some scholarships as well – please ask us about them.

We can’t wait to see you, and sing and dance with you again, and collectively find out “What Dreams May Come”!
