Chess The Orcas Chess Club meets at Eastsound Library at 3:30 p.m., every Monday afternoon. Members age five to 105 with exceptions at both ends are welcome. Contact Phil Heikkinen at the library for details.

Al-Anon The Al-Anon group on Orcas meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Parish Hall to the right of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Al-Anon is for friends and family of alcoholics.

Open Mic The Lower Tavern has open mic night weekly starting at 7:30 p.m. Jaen Black will host the event. Everyone is welcome.

Open Mic Pizza Night A weekly benefit at Doe Bay Resort Cafe with a different nonprofit organization chosen to benefit each month. Dinner served from 6 to 10 p.m. and the Open Mic starting between 7 and 8 p.m.

Blood pressure check-up There is a free blood pressure check-up between 10 a.m. and noon at the Orcas Island Medical Clinic. No appointment is needed.

Ping Pong The Orcas Table Tennis Association plays at the Orcas Christian School gym. The table tennis games run from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the West Beach Resort, and there is a $2 admission charge to help pay for rental fees. For more info, call Jamey Hanse at 376-2240.

Thursday, Feb. 19

“Wait until Dark” The Actors Theater of Orcas Island is presenting six performances of “Wait Until Dark” in Feb. and March. There will be a special sneak preview to benefit Kaleidoscope at 7:30 p.m. at the Grange. Tickets for this event are $25 and 100 percent of the proceeds go to Kaleidoscope. Tickets are available at Kaleidoscope, Darvill’s Bookstore and at the door.

Friday, Feb. 20

Celebrating Lincoln The San Juan County Republican Party is celebrating the 200th Birthday of Abraham Lincoln. The evening includes guest speakers and a special dinner at the American Legion Hall starting at 6 p.m.

Crossroads The lecture series “Crossroads: Ideas for a New Century” will resume at 7:30 p.m. at Orcas Center. Professor Joseph Massey, founding director of the Center for International Business at the Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College, will speak on “The Dragon and the Elephant: China, India, and Global Economic Leadership in the 21st Century.” Tickets are available at Darvill’s Bookstore and the Orcas Library at no cost.

“Wait until Dark” The Actors Theater of Orcas Island is presenting six performances of “Wait Until Dark.” Performances are on Friday, Feb. 20, Saturday, Feb. 21, Friday, Feb. 27, Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1. Library sale The Friends of Orcas Island Public Library will have its Winter Book Sale in the high school cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be thousands of books on sale many priced as low as 50 cents. All funds raised from the sale will go towards funding library activities.

Buddhist meditation class Open to everyone, the class runs from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Orcas Island Library, 500 Rose St, Eastsound. Fight breast cancer Support the fight to end breast cancer by buying goodies from the Orcas 3-Day Walk team. There will be a booth outside Island Market all day. Meet the local team and have a tasty treat!

Bus to Olympia Parents and community members may speak to state legislators and voice concerns about the education system. The state PTA has chartered a bus to leave from the Anacortes Ferry Terminal early that morning (returning the same day). The cost is $25 per person. Babysitting clinic There will be a babysitting clinic for girls and boys grades six and up from 10 to 3 p.m. at the Orcas Fire Hall meeting room. Margie Sabine will provide the basics of babysitting presented by the Red Cross. Each participant will receive a babysitting certificate and be placed on a community babysitters list if they wish. Participants are encouraged to bring ideas for games, recipes, and fun activities for babysitting. The cost is $20 and space is limited to 16. The clinic is sponsored by the Orcas Island Recreation Program. Call 376-5339 to register.

Friday, Feb. 20

Tuck & Patti For nearly three decades, this unique vocal/guitar jazz duo has cast its musical spell worldwide. Tuck and Patti will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Lopez Center. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth. They are available at www.lopezcenter.com, Paper Scissors on the Rock, Blossom Organic Grocery, Islehaven Books, and Islandale Southender. Saturday, Feb. 21

Classical music concert The Islands Sinfonia and Ginni Keith will present the first of a series of benefit concerts for the DVSAS Lopez Family Options Program. The program will feature works by Handel, Mozart, Bach, and Williams. Desserts, hot beverages and conversation will all be had after the concert at the Lopez Island Community Center at 3 p.m. A $15 donation at the door will go to help fund FOP.

Bingo for pies 4-H Bingo for Pies at the Lopez Grange from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be food, fun, and prizes.

Monday, Feb. 23

Lopez Prevention Partnership At 6 p.m. there will be a one-hour meeting of the Lopez Prevention Partnership in the Library meeting room. Come to the back door if the front is locked. Light refreshments will be served.

SATURDAY, Feb. 28

Puppet show Puppets on the Rock proudly presents “The Adventures of Sinbad” by Oregon Shadow Theatre at 2 p.m. at the Lopez Center. After taking Lopez audiences to Italy in November and to China in January, they continue with their tour around the world through puppet theater with this tale from Persia. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for youth and are available in advance at Blossom Organic Grocery and Islehaven Books.
