Chess The meeting time for the Orcas Chess Club at Eastsound Library during 2009 will be 3:30 p.m., every Monday afternoon. Members age five to 105 with exceptions at both ends are welcome. Contact Phil Heikkinen at the library for details.

Open Mic The Lower Tavern has open mic night weekly starting at 7:30 p.m. Jaen Black will host the event. Everyone is welcome.

WEDNESDAY

Theosophical Library Indralaya’s Theosophical Library is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. The theosophical discussion group also meets at Indralaya from 7:30 to 9 p.m. For info call 376-4526 or email indralaya@indralaya.com.

Open Mic Pizza Night A weekly benefit at Doe Bay Resort Cafe with a different nonprofit organization chosen to benefit each month. Dinner served from 6 to 10 p.m. and the Open Mic starting between 7 and 8 p.m.

SATURDAY

Ping Pong The Orcas Table Tennis Association plays at the Orcas Christian School gym. The table tennis games run from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the West Beach Resort, and there is a $2 admission charge to help pay for rental fees. For more info, call Jamey Hanse at 376-2240.

Thursday, Feb. 5

Band-O-Rama The community is invited to the Orcas School Music Room Stage in the cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. to listen to Band-O-Rama. This will be an opportunity to hear band students from 5th to 12th grade.

Business Essentials seminar The Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce presents a workshop on affordable housing on Orcas Island and the San Juans. Come for coffee, tea and pastries at the Outlook Inn, Victorian Room at 7:45 a.m. The presentation will run from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Guest speakers are Angela Lausch (Affordable Housing Coordinator, San Juan County); Lisa Byers (OPAL Land Trust); and John Campbell (Homes for Islanders). Textile exhibit reception The public is invited to a reception for participating local artists beginning at 5:30 p.m.Textile art ranging from traditional to contemporary will fill the Orcas Center main gallery and Madrona Room throughout February.

Blue grass performance The Blue grass band “Southern Skies” will play at the Lower Tavern at 9 p.m.
