The infamous red, fanged mystery Wabit of recent Orcas lore slipped into the annals of history today, buried beneath a thick layer of cream-colored paint.
The culprits? Only some of Orcas Island’s brightest and best, high school members of the Orcas Key Club. They were tasked with re-painting the tank with a sign for the Food Bank, now in the last days of a $60,000 matching fund drive.
The food bank has already raised $35,000, and if it can raise another $30,000 by Thanksgiving, local donors have promised to chip in another $65,000 to supply the food bank with its own modular building.
Islanders are left with fond memories of a Wabit that haunted our pastoral roads – and perhaps, our nightmares – for a time.
