Recently the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of vandalism in the Lot C area, where an Amazon van was spray-painted with the message, “Monopolies are bad for your health.”
While the Sheriff’s Office is a firm supporter of individuals’ rights to free speech, expression and peaceful protest, these activities must occur within the framework of the law. Vandalizing or damaging someone else’s property undermines the message and causes harm to both the community and the cause itself.
If we are able to identify the individual responsible for this act, we will take appropriate legal action, in accordance with the law.
We encourage everyone to express their views and participate in protests civilly and within legal boundaries. It is important to respect differing opinions, but it is never acceptable to harm people or their property in the process.
