The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

Jan. 17

• On San Juan, deputies conducted a traffic stop on the driver of a car with four juveniles, two of whom were in the back seat hanging out the car windows as the car started to slide sideways on the road. The driver received a citation for second-degree negligent driving.

• A Lopez deputy was dispatched to a welfare check. Designated crisis responders were contacted, and the incident was documented.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to an accident without injury near the ferry landing.

• On Orcas, a deputy responded to a citizen assist.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a reported hay bale blocking traffic. The bale was moved to the side of the road.

• Shortly after the previous report, another deputy responded to a report of a giant ice ball blocking traffic on Lopez. The deputy discovered the caller was referring to a recently moved hay bale wrapped in white plastic. The road was unobstructed.

• A deputy took a report of a vehicle that went off the roadway on Orcas Road in snowy conditions and damaged a fence. Information from the parties was gathered and shared with the property owner.

Jan. 18

• During the night, a deputy on Orcas observed a vehicle pulling two kayaks on the hard-packed snow and iced public roadway near Eastsound. Because the kayaks were being flung into oncoming lanes, the driver was cited for reckless endangerment.

• After an individual missed their early morning plumbing appointment, the Lopez plumber called a deputy because he was concerned that a medical emergency may have occurred. Upon investigation, the individual was found to have slept in and forgot about their appointment.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a reported mail theft.

• Eight San Juan County deputies and Lopez Fire & EMS responded to an individual experiencing a crisis. The individual was known to possess firearms and had made death threats to his neighbors. He was safely taken into custody and transported to jail.

• A deputy on Orcas was called to conduct a welfare check on an individual who, according to a member of his family, did not sound like himself. Once the deputy checked on the person, they were found to need immediate medical attention, aid was dispatched, and they were flown to the hospital for treatment.

• Lopez deputies were dispatched to a residence for a trespassing call. An individual was located and, after an investigation, the deputy determined it to be a misunderstanding and the individual was asked to leave.

Jan. 19

• A Lopez man called about a pending court case.

• A deputy on Orcas received a call to check the welfare of children in a home that the reporting party believed were left alone. A check was conducted, and everything was found to be okay.

Jan. 20

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a citizen assist regarding a custody dispute.

• A Lopez deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle on Weeks Road and issued them a speeding citation for traveling 41 mph in a posted 25 mph zone.

• A citizen called to report the possibility of a stolen bicycle on Orcas. It was not known if the bike was stolen or just moved from the spot where it was left. The caller was advised to call in after he knew if the bicycle was stolen or lost.

• A deputy took a report of a suspicious circumstance due to an intoxicated person near Eastsound. The person was contacted, information was gathered, and the deputy determined no crime had occurred. However, a probation violation was discovered.

• Lopez Fire & EMS and a Lopez deputy were dispatched to an unconscious, unresponsive call that turned into a death investigation. The scene was investigated, the death appeared to be of natural causes, and Evan’s Funeral Home was contacted.

Jan. 21

• Deputies responded to a trouble unknown call on Orcas. An individual was concerned about others who lived around him. After contact, the deputy decided no further assistance was available, and the parties agreed to stay separated.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a domestic dispute, and the deputy determined no crime had been committed.

• On Orcas, a deputy responded to a report of an animal bite near the ferry landing. After a complete investigation and a written report, the owner put down the attacking dog. There are no known injuries to the other dog.

• A deputy was dispatched to a domestic incident in the Friday Harbor area. The deputy arrived and contacted the people involved and, after speaking to the parties involved, determined no crime had been committed.

• On San Juan, a deputy was dispatched to a report of a domestic incident. When the deputy arrived and contacted the person who called, they declined to provide information. There were no signs of a crime at the time.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a civil call in Eastsound, conducted an investigation, and made an informational report.

Jan. 22

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a report of vandalism to county property and began an investigation.

• Deputies responded to unknown trouble on San Juan. An investigation into a landlord-tenant issue is underway, as well as a possible assault report.

• Deputies on San Juan responded to a domestic incident. A protection order granted by a judge earlier in the day was also served during the incident.

• A deputy on Orcas took a trespassing complaint and issued a trespass warning letter.
