The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing site improvements, including the addition of a new restroom facility, on public lands it manages at Turn Point Light Station located on the San Juan Island’s Stuart Island. The proposed action would replace the current composting toilet with a vault toilet, re-route a portion of the existing trail from the outhouse to the historic water tank, remove selected and hazardous trees and create a volunteer host camp site.
The large-scale project work is scheduled to take nine months, beginning Sept. 2008, to avoid conflict with recreational use of the site, during the high-use season. BLM is seeking public review and comments on this proposal until Aug. 22, 2008.
Information is available on the Internet at www.blm.gov/or/districts/spokane/plans or by request from the Lopez Island office at 468-3754. Comments may be e-mailed to gteague@blm.gov or sent to BLM, Lopez Island Office, P.O. Box 3, Lopez Island, WA 98261.
The Turn Point Light Station came under BLM administration after the transfer of facilities from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) in 1991. The site is eligible for inclusion into the National Register of Historic Places.
