The San Juan County Sheriff’s Department answered the following calls.

Dec. 1

• A Lopez deputy was called about vandalism to a watercraft.

• On San Juan, a deputy issued a driver a warning for speeding and for not being in possession of a valid driver’s license.

• An Orcas deputy authored a junk vehicle affidavit. A copy was given to the owner of the business.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of fraud and documented the incident. There is no suspect information at this time.

• An Orcas deputy took an incident report referencing a non-injury traffic collision that occurred in May of 2020. There was no crime committed and the report was civil in nature.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of threats. The suspect was contacted and the incident was documented.

• Deputies responded to a prowler call in the Eastsound area. The matter was determined to be civil.

• Orcas deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance. No crime was committed.

Dec. 2

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a death investigation. The incident was documented as a natural death.

• Deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the Eastsound area. No crime had been committed.

• A deputy investigated a burglary at a business in Eastsound. Forced entry was made to the business. Cash and other items were stolen.

• An Orcas deputy investigated a burglary at a business in Eastsound. Forced entry was made to the business items stolen.

• A Lopez deputy was called regarding a dog running at large near the school. Nearby neighbors assisted in locating the owner, who responded and collected the dog.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a littering complaint.

• Deputies on Orcas responded to a verbal domestic dispute. No crime had been committed and the situation had de-escalated prior to the deputies’ arrival.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped a vehicle for going 43 mph in a posted 25 mph speed zone. The driver was issued a citation for speeding.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a cold shoplifting report. Employees had already contacted, identified, and released the suspect. They wished for the suspect to be trespassed from company premises. A trespass letter was signed by the reporting party and will be issued to the suspect.

• A deputy responded to a communications call involving some possible improper communication involving teenagers. An initial report was generated and forwarded to detectives for further investigation.

Dec. 3

• An Orcas deputy assisted a citizen with the disposal of unwanted firearms.

• A dropped off a found personal item at the front door of the sheriff’s office. Attempts have been made to contact the owner of the item. The item has been secured for safekeeping.

• A deputy investigated a trespassing violation at a business in Eastsound.

• An Orcas deputy investigated a report of a forged/fraudulent check from a local utility company. An investigation is ongoing.

• A deputy on Lopez was advised of a person whose driving privileges were revoked for medical reasons. The person, who was in denial about the problem, was contacted and the consequences of violating the suspension were explained.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a fireworks complaint. The involved boat was not in the area when the deputy arrived.

• An Orcas deputy investigated an attempted burglary to a private residence. An investigation was conducted.

• A Lopez deputy responded to the school for a juvenile issue. The matter is currently being handled by school staff, parents, and Child Protective Services.

• A deputy on Orcas returned a phone call regarding an earlier traffic collision. The incident met the criteria for mandated self-reporting. The complainant was provided with the required forms.

Dec. 4

• Orcas deputies responded to a possible domestic dispute.

• In the early morning hours, the San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to a structure fire on Orcas. The circumstances surrounding the fire appeared suspicious and the case was being investigated.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a report of a person standing in the roadway. The person was reportedly hampering fire department vehicles responding to a structure fire. The subject was arrested for assaulting a fire department member.

• The reporting deputy was contacted about an abandoned vehicle. A tow operator turned in a packet for failure to redeem an impounded vehicle. The registered owner was issued a citation for littering/ failure to redeem an abandoned vehicle.

• A deputy was contacted in reference to a hit and run. The person said their vehicle had been parked in town when someone backed into the front of their vehicle. No obvious damage was observed.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle for traveling 40 mph in a posted 25 mph speed zone. The driver was issued a citation for speed.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for having a defective headlight and two defective taillights. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence.

• A Lopez deputy responded to an accident-without-injury call. An unoccupied vehicle was found in a ditch on Mud Bay Road. The deputy attempted to contact the vehicle’s owner but was unsuccessful. A friendly neighbor helped pull the vehicle out.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a hit and run. The driver was later found and arrested for driving under the influence and a hit and run.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a single motor vehicle collision. The driver was found after leaving the scene and the driver was arrested for driving under the influence.

Dec. 5

• A Lopez deputy responded to a noise complaint. A lively Quinceanera had a live band playing music in the community center. The band agreed to lower their volume.

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a domestic incident with assault. The suspect had left prior to arrival. Investigation revealed probable cause for domestic violence charges of residential burglary and fourth-degree assault.

• A deputy was dispatched to a littering complaint in the Eastsound area.

• A deputy was contacted about the theft of an item taken from a gallery open house. The person provided a photo of the missing item.

• A deputy was dispatched to an animal-at-large in the San Juan area. The person reported their neighbor’s dogs were on their property. The owner of the dogs was verbally warned about letting dogs run at large.

• A Lopez resident was issued a citation for a dog at large violation. This person had been given a verbal warning about this problem only a few days prior.

• A deputy was dispatched to a domestic incident in the San Juan area. The deputy arrived and contacted the people involved. The incident was found to be a verbal argument only. The people involved agreed to separate for the night.

Dec. 6

• A Lopez resident reported the theft of a street sign. The incident was documented for future possession of stolen property charges.

• A Lopez deputy performed a welfare check at the request of the school.

• A Lopez resident reported damage to her vehicle that occurred while it was parked in her driveway. The source of the damage is unknown at this time.

• A deputy was dispatched to a trespassing call in the Eastsound area.

• Orcas deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the Eastsound area. no crime had been committed.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for traveling 62 mph in a posted 45 mph speed zone. The driver was issued a citation for speeding.

Dec. 7

• A deputy on Orcas responded to an area business about a burglary that had happened sometime the night before. A report was taken and the case is ongoing.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a mental health call. A man who was hallucinating was put in contact with a crisis responder, who assisted with creating a safety plan.

• A concerned Lopez citizen called to get clarification on dog leash laws. A Lopez deputy provided information and explained how to access the San Juan County Code for reference.

• The reporting deputy was contacted about a cell phone found on San Juan and entered it into evidence.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a citizen assist call. The citizen was advised of how to legally handle an unwanted person on their property.

• A Lopez citizen called with questions about waterfowl hunting regulations. A Lopez deputy answered questions and referred them to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for further information.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a burglary call of a business in Westsound. There are no known suspects at this time.

• A deputy on San Juan was contacted by a person because they were receiving threats on Facebook and provided a written statement. Though no crimes appeared to have been committed at this time, the reporting person was advised to get a civil order.
