Council to discuss accessory building permit policy April 13

The San Juan County Council will discuss the County’s permitting policy on accessory structures at Noon during its meeting on Monday, April 13 – one week later than had been tentatively scheduled. Contractor Tom Nolan initially questioned the policy during the “Citizen Access” section of the Council’s agenda on March 24.

At issue is the current practice of denying applications for building permits for accessory structures on tracts of residentially zoned land where the proposed structures aren’t being built in conjunction with a residence.

In written comments to the Council, Nolan said that within the last six months he has been unable to obtain permits for four separate property owners who want to build garages or boathouses on otherwise vacant properties.

The Council delayed the discussion in order to give the Community Development and Planning Department and County Prosecutor time to complete a staff report on the issue.
