County float in Eastsound remains closed for 2025 season

Submitted by San Juan County.

San Juan County’s Public Works Department owns and/or maintains marine facilities (piers, floats and ramps) at 16 locations across the islands, one of which is located in Eastsound. The department is providing public notice that this facility in Eastsound – a 40-foot-long float – will remain closed for the 2025 season.

Each year, the County removes the marine float at this facility between September and May to protect it from winter storms. During this time, the infrastructure is inspected for damage and safety concerns. This year, the inspection of the Eastsound facility revealed damage to the pilings used to secure the float. This means the float cannot be reinstalled this season.

With support from the County Council, the Public Works Department will engage with marine engineers and contractors to assess, plan and update this facility. This process will include significant permitting and compliance with regulatory bodies in an effort to protect the area’s sensitive environment.

The County recognizes how important these marine facilities are to commuters, visitors, businesses, locals and other service providers who rely on this infrastructure for regular operations and travel. The County is working toward solutions to reopen the facility and apologizes for any inconvenience.

This facility in Eastsound was reconstructed in 1992. An annual report of County marine facilities is available from the Public Works Department at https://www.sanjuancountywa.gov/309/County-Roads.
