San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:

Jan. 2: An Orcas Island woman was bit by a Springer Spaniel while on a mid-afternoon hike in Moran State Park. The 43-year-old was bit by the eight-year-old dog while walking the Mountain Lake Trail at about 3 p.m. The dog’s owner, a 52-year-old Orcas woman, was ticketed by a park ranger.

Jan. 7: An early-morning altercation between two brothers led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man for assault. The older of the two, 42, was taken into custody at his Lawson Road home at about 9:30 a.m., following an ill-fated visit from a younger brother.

Jan. 8: Eight teenagers were arrested on alcohol-related charges in connection with a late-night beach party on the west side of Orcas Island. Deputies arrived on scene at about 10:30 p.m. following complaints about loud voices and the sound of breaking glass coming from the waterfront near West Beach.

Jan. 9: Quick reflexes spared two men from serious injury when their plane lost power moments after leaving the runway at the Lopez Island airport. The instructor, a 42-year-old man, took over the controls and safely landed the crippled Piper in a field near the airport. The plane was reportedly embedded in a hedgerow by the time it came to a stop.

Jan. 11: Someone busted through a locked chain fence and drove onto the football field at Orcas High School twice in less than 24 hours, causing significant damage to the waterlogged turf by doing doughnuts on the gridiron. Based on the tire tracks, authorities believe a small truck was used by those who vandalized the field.

Jan. 13: A Lopez Island man believes a 15-year-old boy who he picked up hitchhiking repaid his generosity by stealing his wallet sometime before getting out of the car. The man reportedly discovered the wallet missing shortly after the encounter, and found out later that someone had used his debit and credit cards, with varying success, to make several transactions. The wallet, in addition to the bank cards, contained $40 cash and the man’s drivers license.

A San Juan Island man was ticketed for negligent driving following an apparent episode of road rage. The 58-year-old, who claims another driver, a 23-year-old man, cut him off near the intersection of Second and Spring streets, gave chase, sped past the other vehicle, which reportedly had no license plate, and then swerved back and forth between both lanes of traffic so that the other driver could not pass. The man was ticketed after both men went to the sheriff office together to air their differences.

Jan. 14. A pair of warrants led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman after deputies, armed with a search warrant, found what they were looking for at a home in the 2000 block of Roche Harbor Road. The two, wanted on unrelated matters – a prior felony conviction for him and a misdemeanor for her – were taken into custody at about 10 p.m.

An encounter with a pit bull prompted a Friday Harbor man to notify authorities about the unsettling incident. The 27-year-old claims the pit bull aggressively approached his 4-year-son, dragging the man who was walking it and another dog on separate leashes at the time, after he and the boy pulled into the driveway of their Park Street home and then got out of their car. The man reportedly knows both the dog, a three-year-old male named Clifford, and its owner, a 21-year-old man. No injuries were reported.

Jan. 15: A 73-year-old San Juan Island was tracked down and ticketed for failure to yield following a near-collision earlier in the day with a woman trying to cross a Friday Harbor street. The woman reportedly was in the crosswalk at the intersection of Second and Spring streets when the 73-year-old nearly clipped her with his car.

A single-car collision near the intersection of Roche Harbor and Ridgedale roads led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man for DUI. The 53-year-old was taken into custody at about 8 p.m.

Jan. 16: Expired tags led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man for driving with a suspended license following a midmorning traffic stop near the intersection of Larsen Street and Tucker Avenue. The 58-year-old, pulled over at about 10:30 a.m., was ticketed for driving without insurance and for the expired tags as well.

Jan. 17: A San Juan Island woman suspects someone working inside her westside home may be responsible for the apparent theft of an X-Box hard-drive, valued at $80, and a “Sopranos” gift-set collection, valued at $350. An unidentified number of people had reportedly worked inside the 32-year-old’s Madrona Drive home the week before those entertainment items were discovered missing.

Jan. 19: Two tents, a Polaroid camera, a heating device and a cigar box full of antique stamps vanished in an apparent theft, along with 200 vinyl records, at a San Juan Island storage unit near Cattle Point Road. T he value of the missing items, reportedly the property of a 64-year-old Friday Harbor man, was unlisted.
