The League of Women Voters of the San Juans has decided to hold the Candidate Forums for the 2008 General Election on Saturday, Oct. 11. There will be two forums on that day: the first forum will be on Orcas Island for Orcas and Shaw residents at the Senior Center, starting at 9:15 to 11:15 a.m.

The second forum will be at the Friday Harbor Middle School from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and combines San Juan Island and Lopez Island residents. The fall ferry schedule to and from the islands coordinates with these times.

All candidates running for the following positions have been invited: US House of Representatives 2nd District, State Senate, 40th District, State Representative Pos. 1, State representative Pos. 2, County Council, San Juan South, County Council, Orcas West, County Council Town of Friday Harbor.

Orcas Island will have representatives speaking about the two Propositions for the Eastsound Sewer and Water District regarding an increase in the number of commissioners and the annexation of Orcas Village.

The format for these forums will be candidates’ opening statements of three minutes followed by questions from the audience. The statements will be timed and questions moderated by a league member. Those who are unable to participate may send a representative to read a three-minute written statement. However, that representative will not be allowed to answer questions from the audience.
