San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:

May 13: An Orcas Island man claims someone carted off $20,000 of his personal possessions from a neighboring property which he formerly owned, and that recently was repossessed in a bank foreclosure. The 67-year-old, who lives near the Buck Mountain Road property in question, suspects contractors hired to cleanup the foreclosed lot removed the his belongings as well.

May 15: A San Juan Island woman claims that a male acquaintance, a 29-year-old convicted felon, is keeping marijuana, methamphetamine and a firearm at his Friday Harbor apartment.

May 18: Allegations of child abuse prompted the arrest of a San Juan Island man accused of harming a 14-year-old girl. The 33-year-old, who was taken into custody at his Friday Harbor home, faces a charge of second-degree assault, a felony.

May 20: A Massachusetts man accused of trying to evade paying excise taxes by falsifying his boat’s registration was arrested at a San Juan Island marina by federal and state officers. The 64-year-old, who was taken into custody at Roche Harbor Resort, allegedly failed to register the vessel for the past three years.

• Someone discarded several bags of household trash on a Seattle man’s Orcas Island property on Mount Baker Road in an apparent case of illegal dumping. A deputy reportedly found a doctor bill among the garbage that has the name of a man who may offer a clue as to the culprit’s identity.

• A familiar face and a tainted driving record prompted the arrest of a Lopez Island woman for driving with a suspended license. The 43-year-old was taken into custody in the parking lot of a Lopez Village grocery store at about 4:30 p.m.

• A warrant prompted the arrest of a Lopez Island man following an early afternoon traffic stop on Fisherman Bay Road. The 21-year-old, wanted in connection with a local misdemeanor, was taken into custody at about 2 p.m., and also ticketed for driving without a license and without proof of insurance.

May 21: A San Juan Island man suffered a head injury while falling through a plastic construction barrier shortly after midnight. The 34-year-old, who struck his head on a solid part of the temporary barrier, located at the intersection of First and Spring streets, and then landed in a ditch. He reportedly was taken off-island for treatment.

• Someone hurling rocks shattered several windows on two San Juan Island homes in an apparent case of pre-dawn vandalism. The owner of one of the two homes, both located in the 500 block of Roche Harbor Road, reportedly heard the sound of breaking glass at about 5 a.m.

May 23: An Orcas Island woman was ticketed for creating a public nuisance after her dog reportedly bit a 7-year-old Seattle boy during a run-in at the Doe Bay Resort playground shortly before noon. The 47-year-old must either pay the fine or appear in District Court in about two weeks.

• The Orcas Island skate park on Mount Baker Road was defaced by spray paint and graffiti in an apparent act of weekend vandalism. Cleanup of the graffiti, tagged by someone using the signature of “Smashone,” will reportedly cost $2,000.

May 24: A San Juan Island man was arrested for DUI following an early evening traffic stop near the intersection of Argyle Avenue and Dougherty Lane. The 49-year-old, who was pulled over for driving with a broken taillight, was taken into custody at about 8:30 p.m., and also ticketed for not wearing a seat belt.

• A familiar face and bruised driving record led to a mid-morning arrest of an Orcas Island woman for driving with a suspended license. The 47-year-old, who was pulled over near the outskirts of Eastsound at about 10 a.m., reportedly had her license suspended because of unpaid traffic tickets.

May 26: A San Juan Island man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head while en route by life-flight to a Seattle-area hospital for treatment. Deputies and paramedics responded to the 72-year-old’s Terrace Drive home after he called 911 to notify authorities there was a dead body in his backyard at about 10 a.m. A letter found inside the man’s home reportedly explains why he decided to take his own life.
