Eastsound Waters Users Association and the San Juan County Health Department are hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, May 6 at the Orcas Island Senior Center starting at 6 p.m.
The meeting will feature a presentation from hydrogeologist Steve Swope who has authored the recent report on the condition of the Eastsound aquifer. This report reviewed the study of the first year of data from the Groundwater Monitoring Network. There will be discussion of the concerns being generated by elevated nitrates in the Eastsound area, and the potential role septic systems play in this issue. The session will also review how groundwater research is being expanded to develop a clearer picture of the threats to our groundwater supply, and our understanding of its true capacity.
