Financial fraud, dangerous dogs and found fireworks | Sheriff’s Log

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

Aug. 13

• An Orcas deputy responded to a vehicle accident at the intersection of Tall Trees Trail and Lindsay Way, in Eastsound. The accident resulted in the vehicle operator being transported by medical flight off the island for further medical treatment. The collision is being investigated.

Oct. 9

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a residential burglary complaint. The deputy determined the complaint was unfounded. The complainant was referred to a local agency for assistance and support.

• A San Juan deputy took a report of fraud on Orcas. The reporting party advised they had incurred a loss of funds and reported the breach to their financial institutions. No suspect information was available. A report was generated.

• A San Juan deputy working on Orcas responded to a report of a violation of a court order. The incident was investigated and a report was generated.

• An Orcas deputy took a report of a compromised debit card. The reporting parties debit card was used at Costco in Oregon and Nebraska. The reporting party does not know how their card was accessed. A report was authored and the investigation is ongoing.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a mental health call. A referral to Compass Health and APS was made.

Oct. 10

• A Lopez deputy was dispatched to an Agency Assist. Compass Health and Lopez Fire & EMS were present when an individual was contacted. The incident was documented.

• An Orcas deputy spoke with a homeowner on Haven Road about transient problems. Several Trespass Warning letters were generated.

Oct. 11

• A deputy on San Juan received a report of an unwanted person. The deputy gave the person a trespass warning letter and informed the person that they would be subject to arrest for trespass if they returned.

Oct. 12

• A Lopez resident reported that one sheep had been attacked in their yard during the overnight hours by an unknown dog. The sheep was euthanized as a result of its injuries.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle as the driver had a suspended driver’s license. The driver was issued a citation for DWLS in the third degree.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle for displaying under glow lighting. The driver was issued infractions for no valid license with ID and no insurance. Several warnings were given.

• An Orcas deputy investigated a parking problem at the Obstruction Pass County Dock on Obstruction Pass Road. A truck towing a boat with trailer was parked in the day parking area for over two weeks. The vehicle and boat were tagged with a 24-hour notice to remove.

Oct. 13

• A deputy was dispatched to a domestic situation in the San Juan Island area. The deputy arrived and spoke with the people involved. One person was arrested for Assault Fourth degree DV and booked into custody. A report was taken.

• Deputies were dispatched to a burglary in the San Juan Island area. A deputy arrived and contacted the person calling. Several items were missing from the residence. There is no suspect information at this time. A report was taken.

• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued a notice of infraction for speeding 42 mph in a 20 mph zone, on Crescent Beach Drive, Eastsound. A warning was given for not having a valid driver license in his possession at the time of the traffic stop.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of hit and run vehicle accident at the West Sound Marina, located on Deer Harbor Road. Unfortunately, the deputy was unable to locate any information about the accident. A case number was created for future reference.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a theft from a retail store in town. The store had video of the suspect taking an item. The suspect was located and the stolen property was recovered.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of found property. Efforts to return the property to its owner are underway.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a weapon noise. The deputy discovered that fireworks were left in the roadway in the area of the complaint. The deputy took photos and disposed of the spent fireworks. Currently there are no suspects.

Oct. 14

• A firearm was turned into the Sheriff’s Office for safekeeping.

• A Lopez church reported vandalism, likely caused by a local person without housing. A report was completed, and the doors will now be locked.

Oct. 15

• A Lopez deputy stopped a vehicle on Mud Bay Road. The driver was subsequently issued infractions for speeding 53 mph in a 35 mph zone, no vehicle insurance and additional warnings were given.

• A Lopez deputy stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Mud Bay Road and Aerie Place. The driver was subsequently issued multiple warnings for speeding, and no driver’s license on person.

• A detective was dispatched to a report of a hit and run on private property. An investigation was completed and the incident was documented.
